Decision brief
Is Final Fantasy XVI worth it?
Yes, for the right player.
Frozen, not fixed — the PC port's last patch was March 2025 and it is still $49.99. Skip the Complete Edition, and play the free demo before you spend anything.

Who should pick this up
Worth it if…
- Character-action combat is the draw: the Eikon fights are the reason this game exists and they look like nothing else in the series
- A 38-hour story you actually finish suits you better than a 100-hour RPG you never will
- Denuvo was your dealbreaker — Square Enix removed it in the March 2025 patch without announcing it
Skip if…
- Party building is the Final Fantasy you came for: levelling applies only to Clive, and you cannot command your party at all
- Side quests have to justify themselves — no patch ever revised them, so the fetch-quest complaint from launch still stands
- Locked 30fps cutscenes, no FOV slider and long-session freezing would bother you: with no build since March 2025 these are permanent
What long-haul players keep saying
The Eikon set pieces and the combat underneath them. Even players who cooled on the story keep the fights in the positive column.
Performance that never improved, and the side quests. Both complaints date from the PC launch and no build has arrived to change either.
What changed recently
Square Enix stopped shipping builds. Version Update 1.03 on 4 March 2025 is the last one, and it fixed only misdisplayed graphics and localisation text — the real optimisation pass was 1.02 back in October 2024. Seventeen months on, the port's current state is its final state. That same March patch quietly removed Denuvo, which Square Enix never announced.
