Final Fantasy XVI

It is finished rather than fixed. The last build is Version Update 1.03, dated 4 March 2025, and it addressed only misdisplayed graphics and localisation text errors. The substantive performance work was Version Update 1.02 in October 2024, which spread cloud quality across all three shadow-quality levels rather than just high, adjusted graphical fidelity settings and fixed crashes on some hardware. Nothing has shipped in the seventeen months since, and Square Enix's Steam announcement feed has carried no patch at all in that time. So the remaining complaints — 30fps-capped cutscenes, no field-of-view slider, freezing in long sessions — are permanent unless you mod them out. Budget 170GB and an SSD.

Steam tags it as both, and the honest answer is that the RPG surface is thin. Game Rant's breakdown of what the game dropped is blunt about it: Final Fantasy 16 "eliminates party management, with the main protagonist operating mostly solo and limited character progression options", it "removes traditional status effects", and "new character progression and levelling systems are limited strictly to Clive and players can't issue commands to party members in battle". So there is no party to build, no elemental weaknesses to exploit, and nothing to level but Clive. If building a party is the Final Fantasy you came for, this is not it. If you want a character-action game with the best-looking boss fights in the series bolted on, it is one of the strongest around.

Only marginally, and the content it unlocks is the weakest attached to the game. Complete Edition is $69.99 and bundles the base game with both expansions; base is $49.99 and the Expansion Pass is $24.99, so Complete saves you $4.99 over buying them separately, or $9.98 against buying each DLC on its own. That is a thin bundle discount. The bigger point is what you are buying: on OpenCritic the base game holds 92% of critics recommending it, while Echoes of the Fallen sits at 45% and The Rising Tide at 68%. Buy base, finish it, and add The Rising Tide later only if you want more.

It is the better of the two expansions and the more substantial: a new region, Mysidia, the Leviathan Eikon, and a new endgame mode called Kairos Gate in the Arete Stone at the Hideaway, which on Final Fantasy Mode awards components for the Original Sin weapon. Critics put it at 78 on OpenCritic with 68% recommending, against 75 and 45% for Echoes of the Fallen. The recurring criticism is not quality but fit — it slots in before the climax despite Leviathan barely featuring in the base story, which Destructoid described as making it "feel shoehorned in, rather than flowing naturally".

Neither. The Steam store page carries no third-party account requirement and no DRM notice — its only legal gate is agreeing to a third-party EULA, and there is no launcher or external sign-in. Denuvo Anti-Tamper was present at PC launch but was removed in the 4 March 2025 update; Square Enix never announced it, and it surfaced through the game's own patch listing. The game supports Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. There is also a free demo on the store page, which given a frozen build is the most reliable way to find out whether it runs acceptably on your machine before paying $49.99.
