- Crowd control and timing are what you want — the knife parry rebuilds every encounter around reading attacks rather than rationing bullets
- You never played the 2005 game and simply want the version that plays best today
- Steam Deck is your machine: it is Deck Verified, and the DRM long blamed for stutter came out in March 2026

- The 2005 game is what you loved — the remake drops a boss fight, puts durability on Leon's knife and cuts setpieces including the giant stone robot
- Survival-horror dread is the draw: this is an action game first, and the RE2 remake is the better scare

That it is not the 2005 game. The dissent is almost entirely from purists who think the cuts and added side quests dilute the original's pacing.
What changed recently
Capcom removed The Enigma Protector in March 2026 — the DRM that had replaced Denuvo and was widely blamed for stutter on Windows and SteamOS alike. The Steam page now carries no third-party DRM notice at all, and the game is Steam Deck Verified. Most of the performance advice written about this game between 2023 and early 2026 is obsolete.
